cannot get email notification to work

Description
I set up the email but when I test send it tells me" Your test email could not be sent: [Errno 8] hostname nor servname provided, or not known" I believe there is a bug in the email system unless you know of other setting that I cannot find. I set up the root email address under users as well.
I am new to freenas so I may be missing something but by all information from the web for setting it up I should be correct. Thanks Mark

Can you ping the mail server from the console?

I am sorry but I do not know what you call the console. The web server is what I edit through now if I am correct. Sorry but I am new to this. So what is the console and how do I ping it.

It can be done through SSH, if you're under Windows read about putty and enable SSH service in FreeNAS
$ ping google.com
